There is nothing more frustrating than walking into a supermarket or grocery store and seeing fresh produce wrapped in plastic. It makes no sense! The overload of plastic is a major problem, making it more important than ever for brands to be clever when designing for consumers.
Nendo, a Japanese firm, has design a genius packaging graphic for one of the world’s largest fruit distributors Unifruitti. The ‘Shiawase banana’, translating to ‘Happiness banana’, is grown and sold with the green movement in mind. The minimalistic design discards unnecessary bags, boxes or plastic wrap, using a simple double-layered sticker that looks and feels just like a banana peel.
Bananas are already perfectly packaged by nature so a simple sticker to house the brand and story behind this clever banana is all that is needed. The sticker mimics the texture, feel and colour of a banana peel encouraging an unexpected interaction with the consumer. “When we were asked to design the packaging,” the designers explained, “we didn’t want to just come up with something extravagant because of its high quality: that would be totally inappropriate for an environmentally friendly banana.”
A beautifully designed bag inspired by a banana leaf accompanies the banana. This thoughtful and playful packaging design perfectly honours the beauty of nature, which is detailed on the inside of the banana leaf bag.
This seamless packaging celebrates the natural wonder of the production process and maximises the many uses of a simple banana. It would be exciting to see other fruit sellers following this level of crafty design and start to rethink their production process with Mother Nature in mind.
