Road Art Great grassroots local branding

Local communities in the states have been using road art as way to engage and display the hope and spirit of neighbourhoods. The murals which are painted by the community and are popping up at intersections in many big cities also have an awesome side benefit of slowing traffic and making the junctions safer.

When a motorist comes across one they no longer see just an intersection and a barrier to their progress but rather take in it as part of their surroundings, it anchors what they’re doing to the surrounding community. Simply it makes them pause and reconsider where they are. There’s an opportunity here for local government to employ this thinking by taking it to the next level.

By smartly blending place branding, way-finding, cultural and community creativity you could develop an engaging clever and cheap system for branding your communities boundaries or key assets.

The images you see here are part of Paint the Pavement, a street-art program in Saint Paul, Minnesota. PtP, as it’s known, offers support and advice, but the groups of friends and neighbours creating the art are self organised and volunteer run, they are truly of and for their communities.
